Community Hours / Volunteer Opportunities

Which Activities Are Approved:
 

Students can seek opportunities in the community by offering assistance to service clubs, community groups, charities, conservation groups, health agencies and others.

For Example:

  • Fundraising (not-for-profit organizations) – canvassing, walk-a-thons, celebrity games
  • Community sports – coaching
  • Helping to organize community events – homecomings, winter carnival, summer fair
  • Participating in environmental projects – community clean-up, flower or tree planting, recycling program
  • Assisting seniors – grocery shopping, reading to Seniors, helping with crafts
  • Participating on committees – advisory board or committees
  • Participating on community groups – food banks and welcoming committees
 
Which Activities Are Not Eligible:
 
  • Any activity where you are paid (i.e. babysitting, part-time job, etc.)
  • Job shadowing or a work experience component of a course
  • Co-operative education experiences
  • Any required activities of a course or program in which you can earn a credit
  • Playing on a school or recreational sports team
  • Activities which are regular family responsibilities (i.e. farm chores, laundry)
  • Court-ordered community service programs, alternative measures program or any diversionary program that uses community service
  • The handling of hazardous wastes
  • Any activity involving the operation of a vehicle or power tools
  • Any activity that requires knowledge of a tradesperson (i.e. auto mechanic)
  • Any Activity involving banking, securities or other valuables
  • Any activity unsafe, unsupervised environment (i.e. scaffolding)
 
 
STUDENT ACTIVITIES ARE NOT TO DISPLACE WORKERS OR TO OCCUR DURING SCHEDULED CLASSROOM TIME
